The 4 Pillars of Health in Traditional Chinese Medicine

The 4 Pillars of Health in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Protecting the Integrity of Ancient Medicine in a Modern World

By Dr. Kristen Burris, DAcCHM – Eagle Acupuncture, Boise Idaho

In today’s world, health advice spreads fast, often without context, training, or respect for where that knowledge came from.  Many people may not even know the foundation of the health trends they promote. We are here to help decipher what is real, what is good medicine and how to heal.

As a licensed doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and doctor of acupuncture serving Boise, Eagle, Meridian, and the Treasure Valley, I feel a deep responsibility to protect the integrity of this medicine that has been refined over thousands of years. The empirical evidence is awe inspiring. The scientific data behind it is modern proof, ancient medicine works.

You may hear modern wellness influencers talk about “foundations of health” or “pillars of wellness.” What many people may not realize is that these core principles are not new, they are deeply rooted in the ancient Chinese medical philosophy of 养生 (Yang Sheng), or “nourishing life.”

At Eagle Acupuncture, we teach these principles through four essential pillars:

  •  Nourishment

  •  Movement

  •  Rest

  •  Emotional Balance

These are not trends.

They are the foundation of true, lasting health in all people and all chronic health problems.

What Is Yang Sheng (养生)?

Yang Sheng translates to “nurturing life” or “cultivating health.” It refers to the self-cultivation practices that are desgined to promote both health and longevity.

It is the preventative arm of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This focuses not just on treating disease when it is dire and prolonged but instead hones in on living in alignment with natural laws so disease does not develop in the first place. True preventative medicine.

Long before biohacking and wellness trends, TCM doctors taught us that:

  • The body thrives on rhythm and balance

  • Health is created daily through lifestyle and habits

  • Prevention is more powerful than intervention

  • Natural does not mean weak

The Four Pillars reflect this potent and time-tested philosophy.

Pillar 1: Nourishment: The Root of Energy  (Qi), Blood & Hormonal Health

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, food is not just calories or the latest bougee restaurant, it is information, energy, and medicine for our bodies.

The Spleen and Stomach are responsible for transforming food into crucial elements of health:

  • Energy (Qi)

  • Blood

  • Body fluids

When nourishment is weak or of poor quality, everything in our body and mind suffers:

  • Hormones become dysregulated

  • Fertility declines rapidly

  • Digestion falters

  • Fatigue sets in

What We See Clinically in Boise Patients:

  • Gluten sensitivity and digestive dysfunction

  • Chronic bloating and constipation

  • Blood deficiency contributing to infertility and irregular cycles

  • Unrelenting fatigue that does not recover after a nap or a good night’s sleep

A TCM Approach to Enhanced Nourishment:

  • Warm, cooked, easy-to-digest foods (soups, stirfrys)

  • Eating in a calm, regulated, state (no doom scrolling while eating)

  • Avoiding excessive cold/raw foods or beverages especially when digestion is weak ie: salads, ice cream, ice in drinks

  • Individualized dietary guidance based on pattern diagnosis lead by your TCM doctor

At Eagle Acupuncture, we don’t hand out generic diet plans, we tailor nourishment to your constitution, your symptoms, and your goals. This is a one on one visit where we go over what you like and what to avoid.

Pillar 2: Movement (The Free Flow of Qi & Blood)

One of the most fundamental principles in Chinese medicine is:

“Where there is free flow, there is no pain. Where there is no free flow, there is disease.

Movement keeps Qi and Blood circulating throughout the body an thus creates a healthy state of being.

Without proper movement it, we often see in a clinical setting:

  • Pain : neck, shoulder, knee, back, joints

  • Menstrual stagnation, clots and pain

  • Emotional constraint leading to anger and frustration especially Liver Qi stagnation

  • Infertility due in part to poor pelvic blood flow

Movement in TCM Is More Than Exercise:

  • Walking

  • Stretching

  • Strength training

  • Qigong and Tai Chi

  • Pickleball or Tennis

  • Pilates or Yoga

  • Even proper breathing can move blood and energy

Tony Burris, L.Ac., MSTOM specializes in restoring this pillar—especially in:

  • Sports injuries

  • Chronic pain conditions

  • Overuse injuries in athletes and weekend warriors

The  Healthy Goal:

Not just movement, but intentional, balanced, movement that promotes flow without depletion. A tip to keep in mind, if you feel invigorated and good after a workout, the level is just right. If you feel exhausted, brain fog sets in or have systemic pain in your body, the level of intensity was too much.

Pillar 3: Rest (Restoring Yin, Blood & the Nervous System)

In TCM, rest enables the body to:

  • Rebuilds Blood

  • Restores Yin

  • Calms the Shen (spirit)

  • Regulates hormones

Without proper rest, healing cannot occur. This is so critical. Yet so many Americans have terrible sleep and feel they have tried everything and nothing has helped.

Signs This Pillar Is Disrupted:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep

  • Waking between 1–3 AM

  • Anxiety or a “wired but tired” feeling

  • Burnout and adrenal fatigue

  • Waking exhausted

  • Needing daily naps

  • Unable to stay asleep a minimum for 7 hours or more consistently. Most people require 9 hours of sleep to function optimally.

Why Sleep Matters for Fertility, Menopause & Hormones:

  • Sleep directly impacts reproductive hormones

  • Poor rest leads to cortisol imbalance and awful spikes

  • Poor sleep negatively affects egg quality, sperm health, and embryo implantation

  • Poor sleep exacerbates hot flashes, night sweats, pain levels and memory concerns

How We Help At Eagle Acupuncture:

  • Acupuncture to regulate and calm the nervous system

  • Herbal prescriptions to anchor the spirit and restore energy

  • Guidance on restoring natural circadian rhythms for a reliable sleep

This is often the moment patients say:

“I didn’t realize how exhausted my body really was until I finally felt rested again.”

And “This is the best sleep of my life”

Pillar 4: Emotional Stability (The Regulation of Shen & Liver Qi)

This is the pillar most overlooked in modern medicine yet it is one of the most important in TCM. With the onset of mental health awareness after Covid and lockdown of the world, more and more people are seeking out intentional mental health wellness.

Emotional regulation are not separate from our biology and physiology. They are an interconnect web of health or disease.

In Chinese medicine:

  • The Heart houses the Mind (shen or spirit)

  • The Liver regulates the smooth flow of emotions particularly anger, resentment, frustration and rage

When emotions are not processed or expressed:

  • Energy becomes constrained or stuck (think lump in the throat when upset)

  • Hormones become imbalanced

  • Physical symptoms develop and disease starts

What We Commonly See in Private Practice:

  • Anxiety and restlessness in teens and adults

  • Depression

  • PMS and mood swings

  • Chronic stress leading to digestive, hormonal issues and pain problems

  • Trauma stored in the body affecting mood, pain and inflammation

  • Negatively impacting fertility outcomes

A True TCM Approach Includes:

  • Acupuncture to regulate emotional disharmony

  • Supporting the nervous system to calm down and react accordingly

  • Collaborating with licensed and trusted colleagues and counselors when needed

Healing is not just physical. It is emotional, neurological, hormonal and even, electrical and energetic.

Why These 4 Pillars Matter More Than Ever

In a world flooded with:

  • Quick fixes

  • Influencers with no medical background but financial gain

  • Social media “health hacks”

  • Misinformation presented as expertise

It is easy to lose sight of what actually creates health in your own body. Your body has the ability to self-heal, it just often needs support, guidance and maybe a two thousand year old herbal medicine prescription.

These four pillars are not trends or rebranded concepts.

They are:

  • Rooted in classical Chinese medicine with billions of successful treatments

  • Proven through thousands of years of clinical observation

  • Refined through modern application in practices like ours and “proven” through lab work, MRI’s and functional medicine tests.

This is often the case when we balance women’s hormones. Often, they are told there is nothing to be done. Or your AMH will only go down, IVF is your only option. Yet, time and time again we often DOUBLE a woman’s AMH numbers. This is health. This is medicine. These are facts. This is no lab error.

Why Experience Matters in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine is not a protocol-based system. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good study. We recognize protocols must be used in studies. However, they miss the nuances in the individual that gets to the root of their disease or disharmony.

Good medicine requires:

  • Years of formal education and training

  • Board certification and licensing

  • Clinical experience

  • Deep understanding of pattern differentiation

At Eagle Acupuncture, Dr. Kristen Burris, DAcCHM, LAc and Tony Burris, LAc, MSTOM bring:

  • Over two and a half decades of experience

  • Tens of Thousands of treatments given

  • Dual doctorate in acupuncture and TCM herbal medicine

  • Advanced training in acupuncture, herbal medicine, and functional integration

  • Taught Students in TCM medical school at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego  (now called Pacific College of Health and Science)

  • Voted: Best of Idaho, Best of Treasure Valley, Best of Treasure Valley, Boise’s Best, and Top Doc in Eagle

We do not guess.

We do not follow trends.

We are licensed.

We practice medicine grounded in tradition, refined by decades experience. We are the acupuncturists who the doctors see.

A Final Word: Returning to the Foundations

If you are struggling with:

  • Fertility challenges (male or female or miscarriage)

  • Menopausal Difficulties

  • Chronic pain (even when you have tried everything else or you are told surgery is your only option)

  • Digestive issues

  • Hormone imbalance

  • Fatigue, burnout or brain fog

The answer may not be another big box supplement or another quick fix or a trendy diet.

It may be a return to the foundations your body has always needed:

Nourishment. Movement. Rest. Emotional Stability.
