Endometriosis vs. Endometritis: What Every Woman Struggling with Infertility Or Severe Menstrual Pain Needs to Know

By Dr. Kristen Burris, DAcCHM (“Dr. Babymaker”), Eagle Acupuncture – Boise & Eagle, Idaho

Infertility is rarely caused by a single issue in a woman or in a man, often it’s a combination of both. In clinical practice at Eagle Acupuncture, two commonly overlooked women’s health condition by mainstream medical care, and frequently confused by women, are: endometriosis and endometritis. While they very sound similar, these two conditions are fundamentally different diseases requiring very different treatment approaches.

How many times have you been told by your provider that your menstrual pain is “normal”, when in fact, they haven’t tested anything in you to rule in or out either endometriosis or endometritis? We see that every day and it is frustrating for the patients and disappointing as a holistic doctor.

Women often feel dismissed, unheard, ignored, and even gaslit by their medical providers. Dr. Kristen Burris, DAcCHM was repeatedly told by her OBGYN’s that she could take Advil to address her debilitating, life-altering menstrual pain. It was insulting. They offered a little stronger medication naproxen that carries serious risks to women including: stomach pain, dyspepsia, nausea, heartburn, dizziness and headache. Dr. Burris experienced all of these side-effects herself, but her doctors had no other recommendations other than a hysterectomy well before she was married or even attempted at getting pregnant. Inexcusable when a referral to an acupuncturist with TCM herbal medicine could have cured her. It did in fact cure her but not one doctor suggested it. With Naproxen even more serious severe risks include: GI bleed, ulcers, heart attack, stroke and kidney damage. So why is this the first suggestion and not being used as a last resort?

Understanding the distinction between endometriosis and endometritis can be the difference between repeated failed IVF cycles, or the inability to conceive naturally and finally achieving a healthy pregnancy. This is one reason Dr. Burris refers out to trusted colleagues throughout the U.S. If a new patient comes to Dr. Burris and their current OBGYN or RE (IVF doctor) has failed to test her patient for these conditions, yet they have many of the symptoms, a referral is required for proper diagnosis.

What Exactly Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition in women, where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. We most commonly see the transportation of tissue to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic cavity and even found attached to the bowels, lungs and breasts.

Key Symptoms of Endometriosis

  • Severe menstrual cramps

  • Pain before and during menstruation

  • Pain with intercourse

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Heavy or irregular bleeding

  • Infertility

  • Digestive symptoms including: bloating, constipation, diarrhea

  • Pain with a bowel movement

  • Coughing up blood during menstruation

  • Nose Bleeds with menstruation

How Endometriosis Affects Fertility

Endometriosis impacts fertility through multiple mechanisms throughout a woman’s body:

  • Inflammation damaging egg quality and uterine lining

  • Adhesions or scar tissue making uterine lining uninhabitable and potentially blocking fallopian tubes

  • Hormonal disruption affecting ovulation

  • Immune dysfunction interfering with embryo implantation (the inability to carry a pregnant)

Even mild endometriosis can significantly impair embryo quality; something often missed in conventional fertility evaluations. Mild cramps are often written off as normal. Even severe menstrual cramps are blown off as part of the suffering of being a woman. This must change. This is not okay. Fertility or not, women do not need to suffer with their periods. Truly, honestly. It does not and should not be this way. Tell someone. Share this. Spread the truth. Women deserve better.

Comparatively Here Are Key Symptoms of Endometritis

Endometritis is a chronic or acute infection and inflammation of the uterine lining called the endometrium.

Endometritis is often silent, meaning, the woman feels no pain and has no obvious reasons to suspect something is wrong. This is by far one of the most underdiagnosed causes of recurrent miscarriage and failed IVF embryo implantation resulting in an early miscarriage.

Many women will however experience:

  • Recurrent miscarriages

  • Several Failed IVF cycles

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding before, during,  or after menstruation

  • Pelvic floor or abdominal discomfort (this is often mild or absent altogether)

  • Unusual vaginal discharge (often absent) this can have odor or not, it can be brown or not

Many women have no obvious symptoms, which is why it is so frequently missed in a traditional infertility workup costing patients tens of thousands of dollars down the road in failed IVF treatments.

Endometriosis vs. Endometritis: Key Differences To Note

Endometriosis

Location: Outside Uterus

Cause: Inflammatory, estrogen-driven

Pain: Often severe

Fertility Impact: Egg quality, tubal function

Diagnosis: Laparoscopy (gold standard)

Endometritis

Location: Inside uterine lining

Cause: Infection (bacterial imbalance)

Pain: Often minimal or absent completely

Fertility Impact: Embryo Implantation failure, miscarriage

Diagnosis: Endometrial biopsy

Why These Conditions Are Missed in Conventional Fertility Care

Many fertility clinics ignore women’s pain and root cause medicine and instead focus on:

  • Hormone and Drug Therapy

  • Ovarian reserve

  • Basic imaging

  • Basic Lab work to check for big infections or sexually transmitted diseases

But almost no conventional fertility centers investigate root causes, such as:

  • Chronic, systemic inflammation

  • Vaginal Microbiome imbalance

  • Stealthy or silent infection

  • Immune dysregulation

  • Sub-clinical lab results

  • Micronutrient Deficiencies

  • Hormone Imbalance

  • Stress

This is why patients can go through multiple failed IVF cycles with poor embryo quality or failed implantation without any answers. They are told repeatedly that their infertility is unexplained, IVF is their only option, but this is just not true in the majority of cases we treat. In most cases we find a root cause in either the husband, or the wife, or both that show real causes of infertility, and then we go about healing the problem before they try again naturally or go through another extremely expensive and invasive IVF process.

Conventional Treatment Approaches

Endometriosis Treatment

  • Hormonal suppression (birth control, GnRH agonists) This is obvious a terrible treatment option for those trying to get pregnant

  • Pain medications with high risk side-effects and/or high addiction rate

  • Laparoscopic surgery

Endometritis Treatment

  • Antibiotics (often short-term)

  • Occasionally repeat biopsy to confirm resolution

While these approaches can be helpful, they often:

  • Do not address underlying immune dysfunction

  • Do not restore optimal uterine environment

  • Do not improve overall reproductive health

  • Do not always improve pain levels

  • Do not address stress

  • Do not improve mental health

A Root-Cause Approach: Functional Medicine Testing

At Eagle Acupuncture, we look deeper and we aim to heal.

Advanced Testing May Include:

  • Vaginal microbiome testing (to identify hidden infections)

  • Comprehensive stool analysis (gut–immune connection)

  • Inflammatory markers systemically

  • Hormone metabolism testing (DUTCH test and blood lab test)

  • Nutrient deficiencies (iron, vitamin D, B vitamins)

  • Autoimmune screening

This allows for a personalized treatment plan, never, ever a one-size-fits-all protocol. Additionally, all of this is done with a TCM lens: the most powerful, advanced herbal medicine in the world. We can treat endometriosis with herbal medicine and endometritis with herbal medicine. The conditions are called something different in TCM but we have treatment options for damp heat in the lower pelvic area, blood stagnation in the uterus, or even blood deficiency leading to blood stagnation. There are many differentiating diagnosis that we can address and heal, with or without drugs or surgical interventions.

How Acupuncture Supports Fertility in Both Conditions

Acupuncture is not simply a “relaxing treatment”—it is a powerful medical intervention with science backing its effectiveness. In addition, we have billions of treatments over thousands of years proving it’s efficacy. So, whether you are a science-based mind or an empirical evidence-based mind, we have proof that this treatment works.

Evidence-Based Benefits of Acupuncture and TCM Herbal Medicine:

  • Improves blood flow to the uterus

  • Improves blood flow to ovaries

  • Improved blood flow to pelvis

  • Reduces inflammatory cytokines

  • Regulates hormones

  • Improves or regulates ovulation

  • Modulates immune response

  • Balances hormones

  • Alleviates pain

  • Regulates the HPO axis (hypothalamus pituitary ovarian)

  • Improves implantation rates and live birth rates in IVF

For endometriosis:

  • Reduces pain

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Supports healthier ovulation

  • Modulates immune system

For endometritis:

  • Enhances uterine receptivity

  • Reduces infection

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Supports immune balance and healing

The Power of Individualized Chinese Herbal Medicine

One of the most important distinctions in TCM herbal medicine:

There is no single “herb” for endometriosis or endometritis. None. You cannot Vitex or Curcumin your way out of either of these problems.

As a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine (DAcCHM), treatment is based on:

  • Your specific pattern diagnosis

  • Your constitution

  • Your fertility goals

  • Your tongue and pulse

  • Your temperature (do you feel hot or cold or neither)

Clinical Goals of Herbal Medicine:

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Improve pelvic blood circulation

  • Regulate menstrual cycle

  • Balance Gut Flora

  • Balance Vaginal Flora

  • Balance Hormones

  • Fight Infection

  • Support implantation

  • Address underlying infection patterns

  • Increase blood if deficient, move blood if in excess

  • Improve egg quality

  • Improve Sperm quality including motility (how it moves), morphology (how it is shaped), count (how many), DNA fragmentation

This level of personalization and the time it takes to research, investigate, and follow up is what is often missing in conventional care. That and the lack of respecting how stress impacts our fertility and our health at large.

Real Clinical Insight: Why IVF Fails Without Addressing These Conditions

In patients over 35 especially, we frequently see:

  • “Unexplained infertility”

  • Poor embryo quality

  • Ignoring the male partner- not testing morphology or DNA fragmentation

  • Recurrent implantation failure

  • High stress

  • High drive, high functioning person with no down time, no quiet time

Yet when we, at Eagle Acupuncture, with Dr. Babymaker Burris investigate:

  • Hidden endometritis

  • Undiagnosed endometriosis

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Low AMH

  • Low DHEA

  • Low Iron

  • Gut Health

  • Vaginal Health and Microbiome

  • Male Partner (even when labs are normal)

When these concerns are addressed, outcomes can change dramatically. Success rates soar. Stress plummets. Health ensues. Happiness follows and then the family grows.

The Takeaway: You Deserve Answers

If you or someone you know has:

  • Painful periods

  • Recurrent miscarriages

  • Failed IUI cycles

  • Failed IVF cycles

  • “Unexplained infertility”

  • Told “IVF is your only option”

  • Male Factor Infertility

  • Auto-immune Disease

  • High Stress

You deserve a deeper investigation into root causes of why you can’t get or stay pregnant. Our expertise is unique because functional medicine providers alone don’t have the wisdom or education with thousands of years behind them. Together, we can help you. Together is better. Functional Medicine + TCM Medicine = Superior results.

Endometriosis and endometritis are not the same, yet both can quietly and sadly, prevent pregnancy.
